The Books of Merle

Book IV
Divine Coregency & The Consortium

Picking up some 10 years after the resolution of the Rebellion and the establishment of the Divine Council of Twelve (end of Book 3), Divine Coregency 4 focuses on the offspring of the original characters as they enter adult life. Namely, José's daughters with Alejandra and Demeter, Randolph and Isabelle's twin sons and Felipe's daughter and son with Chloe. There are also new characters, Tony and Simon, and cameo appearances from Hayda Loral. This group of characters faces two new villains, Sally Rodríguez (head of the Consortium) and The Skaarb of Acheron as they try to uncover the mystery behind the death of Lucina's sister, Angelina.

After a volcanic eruption destroys Monasterio Del Ignacio, a classified organisation called "The Consortium" is set up. Their mission is to track down demonology in the Lorallian and eliminate malevolent spirits who are supposed to have invaded the peninsula via the monastery's catacombs. Sally Rodríguez, their leader, believes the murder to have been carried out by one of the twins, either Fabien or Damien.

When Lucina is shot in a freak accident outside the monastery, her friend Fabien leaps in to heal her without regard for the secret that he keeps about his brother, Damien, and himself. Though Lucina withdraws from Fabien when she finds out that they are angels, she slowly realises that Fabien poses no danger to her. Lucina keeps his secret from Sally and a local journalist, Silvano, despite their suspicions. But she tells her cousin, Despina. Despina can't handle this by herself so she tells Corina. The five of them figure out a way to put aside their fears and trust each other. At the end, Lucina asks Fabien if his brother Damien was responsible for her sister's death, and he denies it.

Fabien and Damien agree not to use their powers anymore. But after a new guy, Tanguy comes to town, strange events happen. Damien soon realises Tanguy is one of them, the third angel who was also reincarnated. Tanguy doesn't understand why Fabien and Damien don't use their powers and are afraid of the angel hunters.

Fabien gets hired at the theatre in Cannes. Sally is suspicious about the recent strange occurrences. Therefore, she interrogates Lucina. Lucina takes Fabien and go after Tanguy, who is accompanied by Corina. They start a fight. Corina keeps defending her new boyfriend. Angry, Tanguy touches and seriously hurts Lucina. While Fabien heals her, Tanguy and Corina take off. Fabien, Damien, Lucina and Despina are led by Sally to the Palasades. Corina and Tanguy must be there. Tanguy has just knocked the guard down with her power when they arrive. Fabien and Lucina stick together. Almost caught by Sally, they share a passionate kiss. Sally finds the couple first and fires a shot at Tanguy. Before getting to Corina, Lucina distracts her. Corina, Fabien and the others are now all right, but Sally has caught Lucina. Then Harry appears and sends Sally a kiss good night. Lucina is free. Fabien is relieved. Harry admits he's an archangel.

After Tanguy was killed in the Palasades, Corina suffers an emotional breakdown. Tony stands by her and brings her back. As a result, she starts appreciating her life and promises she will never do something so foolish ever again. Fabien tells Lucina that their kiss from the Palasades means nothing and he wishes he stayed away from her. Lucina is hurt and starts dating a man called Jay. Harry begins teaching Fabien and Damien how to do things with their power. He also explains that their ship was marooned by an evil Skaarb who has stolen a powerful ring. Despina and Damien start doing things together. At first, they think they are just friends, but then they realise it is much more than that. They kiss. Despina thinks she has psychic abilities because she gets flashes of certain things. In the end, after Despina is almost killed but Damien risks his life for her, Harry tells them it was a manipulation of some demons who were looking for the angelic ring Despina has taken from the Palasades. Finally, Harry takes the ring and hides it.

Fabien is hit by an angelic phase. Harry explains that it is called "Apotheosis" and it is usual for their species. Every angel contracts it when he or she reaches maturity. The problem is, Fabien will die unless he is healed by Rodrigo's crystals, crystals that are on their ship. Fabien soon loses weight, strength and his powers.Damien, Corina, Despina and Lucina help Fabien find the ship, which Sally and her Consortium have. They plan a dangerous escape in order to recover the crystals. Lucina supports Fabien and they decide that if he survives, they can become more than friends. Damien, Corina and Harry go to the secret location of the ship. Harry is killed and Damien is captured. Only Corina comes back with the crystals.

Fabien is saved, but Harry is dead, and Damien is Sally's prisoner. After three days, a young man comes to Fabien and Corina. He proves to be an angel and was raised in captivity by Sally. His name is Simon. He seems to be acting like a young boy but in fact his power is stronger because it has been developed by Sally's Consortium. He also forms a crush on Lucina. A few days later, Fabien, Lucina, Corina, Despina and Simon go to the Consortium to rescue Damien. Simon leads them straight to Sally's office. Simon kills Sally and then tries to kill Fabien. Then he starts a huge fire. Fabien, Lucina, Corina and Despina take Damien and his prison companion, Hayda, out of the Consortium. Sally is dead. They are all safe now.

The gang tries to figure out Simon, whether he's evil or not, and what to do about him. Damien has fallen for Hayda and she for him (Despina is upset over it), and they fight when he discovers the truth about her. Hayda departs for Paris but comes back to the gang just in time to rescue them.

Eventually the Five discover that the local journalist, Silvano, is the evil Skaarb that they were told marooned the ship all those years ago and that he was remote controlling Simon when the Consortium was destroyed. This guy can teleport, and Fabien learns to do so as well. Silvano (The Skaarb) has searched for hundreds of years for the Ring of Acheron as a power source and finds it in possession of the Five. The gang tries to send Silvano to his enemies through a vortex, adopting his appearance as part of their efforts. They send him through with the demons but discover that it was Simon they sent through and the real Skaarb escapes with the ring.

Hayda has departed for Paris (again). The twins find out that Harry (the archangel) left them the ownership of the theatre in his will so they've got a place of their own now. The gang investigates the Skaarb's office and discovers a photograph of Sally with Manu, the new monastery keeper, showing that he's also in the Consortium. They try to recover the ship from the Consortium ruins but flee when they see someone coming, later it's gone. Despina suggests that the Skaarb may have hidden the ship in Plymscombe. Meanwhile, Fabien gets mixed signals from the Nexus about Simon (he's afraid, some are curious about him, some want him dead).

During their trip to Plymscombe, the protagonists find the ship hidden in the cave and run into a chemical weapon trap set by Manu, deadly to the angels. Lucina, Despina and Corina drag their friends to safety. They have a confrontation with the Skaarb and Manu, discovering that Manu isn't an enemy as he saves them with more gas after being trapped in the ship with them. The Skaarb flees and the group sail the ship out of the caverns.

Simon returns to Earth through a vortex and thinks someone/something evil followed him. He reports that the demons created a new vortex enabling him to return home but that another demon followed him through and is probably still out there in the world. Lucina meets a stranger outside the monastery, and it turns out to be her long-lost sister, Angelina, who slipped through with Simon. The twins throw a welcoming party at the theatre. Most of the party is spent with everyone trying to decide who should be trusted, with half of them (Lucina, Corina and Damien) wanting to trust Angelina and the other half of them (Fabien, Simon and Despina) thinking that Angelina might be a danger. Simon thinks she might want the ring that was used to resurrect her. Tony seems like a villain as he kidnaps Despina's brother, Pip, in ransom for information about his mother.

Tony confronts the Five and Lucina's sister Angelina joins up with the evil Skaarb. They get Despina's brother Pip back and spend the rest of the time dealing with the Skaarb and the fact that Damien has developed the dangerous Apotheosis condition. Fabien and Despina want Damien to join the Nexus while Lucina, Corina and Damien himself do not. Supposedly, the Skaarb is the leader of the rebel faction - the Chthonian - wanting to destroy the Nexus with the Ring of Acheron. Angelina claims that the condition is survivable without merging. She is telling the truth, although it takes the use of the ring to do it. The Skaarb is killed in battle and Angelina flees in terror. The ring is necessary to survive Apotheosis and destroy the Nexus, and the gang now has possession of the ring. They use it to rejuvenate Damien and he is safe again.

Simon (who died at the hands of the Skaarb) is buried. Fabien and Lucina follow a succession of ghosts who warn them that the race of angels - known as the Elysium - departed this realm through a device called "The Eye" and are now trapped in the Nexus, unable to return to their earthly bodies. Damien, Corina and Despina attempt to find a way of opening "The Eye". Corina and Damien are attracted to one another. Damien realises he loves Despina - but as he believes that he will be leaving the Lorallian with his brother, he goes into operation 'Cold Turkey' to prevent Despina from going through a withdrawal stage as he did with Hayda. Lucina keeps trying to get through to the spirits of the Nexus. The group finally figure out a way to open "The Eye". They use the Ring of Acheron in their possession to activate "The Eye Machine", but without the missing part, they cannot get it to work. Using a device they get from Tony (who is now in a mental asylum for saying that the angels killed his mother), they neutralise the ring. They disperse all of the spirits, including those of Harry. The group is reunited happily at the end but the angels decide that they must separate from the mortals, make contact with the dispersed angels and rebuild Hellas.

Characters

PRIMARY

Fabien - the 'lighter' twin. The polite, well-mannered son of Isabelle Oreille and her partner Pierre Martel, who becomes the first male head of the College Des Sirènes. He's an angel with the ability to heal with a touch. Later in the book, Fabien falls in love with Lucina.

Damien - the 'darker' twin. The volatile, destructive son of Randolph Spitzburg who grew up under the tyrannical control of his evil stepmother, Sophia Arageiner. He's an angel with the ability to kill with a touch. Damien initially strikes up a tentative relationship with Despina but then has affairs with Hayda and flirtation with Angelina. He ends up falling in love with Corina.

Lucina - daughter of José and Alejandra. She is saved from a gunshot wound by an angel and unknowingly becomes embroiled in a massive conspiracy that will determine the fate of the world.

Despina - Lucina's cousin - daughter of Chloe and Felipe and older sister of Pip. A passionate vegetarian and environmentalist living in the mountains, Despina is a smart, canny chick who is into baking, martial arts, yoga and meditation. Thoroughly in touch with her chakras and the forces of the natural universe, Despina proves herself as a true heroine. She initially falls in love with Damien, but when he rejects her, she ends up marrying Qing, the blue-green emperor from Jianghu.

Corina - Lucina's 'half a sister' - daughter of José and the late Demeter. A botanist, Corina has grown into a beautiful young woman who breaks the hearts of many men across the kingdom. Her shrewd, cunning nature enables her to lie, deceive, manipulate and allude people - powers which become vital to the group's survival. She has fleeting relationships with Tony and Tanguy, before falling in love with Damien.

SECONDARY

Tony - son of Sally, and Corina's first major love interest. Corina gets close to him in order to spy on Sally and protect the angels' secret. Unbeknown to her, Sally uses her son Tony to do the same, for gaining knowledge about the angels. Tony is used as a spy from both sides and ends up in a mental asylum in the snows of Scandinavia, driven crazy by the conflicting knowledge he has obtained from both sides. Appears sporadically throughout chapters 1-10. Tony eventually joins the Consortium on their quest and, alongside Hayda, enters into Jianghu with the main protagonists. His knowledge of ancient civilisations soon proves beneficial to the group.

Simon - Lucina's second major love interest. A demon captured in the Consortium. He is held hostage with Damien Spitzburg-Oreille and Hayda Loral, and is helped to escape by both protagonists. Simon gets possessed by the Skaarb on a number of occasions, including killing Sally and blowing up the Consortium compound. He becomes enamoured with Lucina but unfortunately dies at the hands of The Skaarb. Appears in chapters 5-9.

Hayda  - a mortal who gets romantically entangled with the twins. Initially she is used as a spy for Sally Rodríguez but she ends up falling for Damien and siding with the protagonists. A tragic widow who has recently lost her husband and two children, desperately looking for love. Appears primarily in chapters 5-6 and fleetingly in chapters 7-8. Hayda eventually joins the Consortium on their quest and, alongside Tony, enters into Jianghu with the main protagonists. Her aptitude for languages soon proves beneficial to the group.

TERTIARY

Corina's associates:
Erin - main rival of Corina Velásquez.
Hermione - another friend of Corina Velásquez.
Mel - best friend of Corina Velásquez.

Harry  - an archangel who was responsible for building the Athanor and forging the Amarendine Locket. He initially employs Fabien as a singer and actor at his theatre but eventually reveals himself to the angels as one of their protectors (the other being Stan, who perished at the beginning of Book 2 at the hands of the Imperium). Harry teaches the angels how to use their powers in order to protect themselves, and also gives them a 'heads up' on the threat emanating from Hell.

Jay  - a handsome male who catches the eye of Lucina Velásquez and Hayda Loral. Appears in chapter 3 (with Lucina) and chapter 8 (with Hayda).

Manu - the new head of the Consortium who takes over from Sally. Eventually becomes one of the three sovereigns of New Jianghu / Zhongguo.

Pip (Felipe Junior)  - Despina's annoying brat of a younger brother.

Tanguy - only appears in Chapter 2. He is also an angel and makes contact with the twins. He tries to encourage them to use their powers but eventually dies at the hands of Sally, who mistakenly identifies him as the murderer of Lucina's sister, Angelina.

Zac - deputy headmaster at the College Des Sirènes. Openly gay and once had a homoerotic experience with Fabien.

VILLAINS

Sally  - an agent with links to a secret organisation known as "The Consortium" whose mission is to prevent evil from spreading from Hell into the world. Sally almost witnesses the angelic healing in Escaletaña and devotes her life to chasing angels and demons. Initially portrayed as an antagonist (albeit a sympathetic one), it turns out that Sally is obsessed with obtaining immortal powers. Unfortunately, she puts herself in danger and dies at the hands of The Skaarb.

The Skaarb - a fallen angel who has established his own order of demons called "The Chthonian" and plans to take over the world. One of the primary antagonists of the book, before he is killed in battle towards the end.

Angelina - Lucina's dead sister - deceased daughter of José and Alejandra - primarily an antagonist (although she occasionally helps the protagonists). Her tragic death happened before the book (in the interim period of 10 years between books III and V), and remains a complete mystery. Several credible candidates emerge - the twins (Fabien and Damien), Tanguy, Harry, Sally and Tony. Angelina is resurrected by the Skaarb and sent through a vortex back to Earth so she can procure the Ring of Acheron.. Angelina comes back to life and reunited with her brother and sister. Although Angelina betrays the group by defecting to the Skaarb, she saves Damien's life from the dangerous Apotheosis before fleeing to the Far East.
