It was an engraved map of Europe with a diagram of the solar system superimposed over the top of it. In the northwest corner there was the sun, situated over my home in Queen's Stanley. Surrounding this, there were four rings and four planets marking four elemental paths - each one’s topography mapped out with extraordinary detail and precision...I realised that I needed to embark on one of the four paths, and that once I had chosen, I would not be able to turn back. Destiny beckoned forth, and, somehow, I knew that if I were not ready, or not adequately prepared in my heart, then I might as well turn back and return home.

Vannecy Flood Basin

16/3/2020

Vannecy Flood Basin is the topographical / geographical name given to the basin of water and area of outstanding natural beauty that sits between Flood Control Dam #3 and Flood Control Dam #4, named after the picturesque village of Vannecy, the centre of the artistic par excellence of the LEU.

Its principle animal is the swan and the artists and musicians who reside in the basin are often referred to as "swans". Outsiders have an ongoing joke that describes these artists and musicians as sliding around in a swan basin all day rather than doing any actual work that is beneficial to the community in a practical sense. Despite this, the swan is inspiration in many tales and folklore that surround the basin. Mermaids are also thought to inhabit its pristine springs and water tables.

The Vannecy Flood Basin is constantly plagued by floods and the water levels have been rising steadily over the decades. Its engineers have built new sub-dams and reservoirs to off-pool some of the accumulated water but the water just keeps on coming!

Durance River Province

16/3/2020

The Durance River Province is the wider area surrounding the Vannecy Flood Basin and the River Durance. Hayda Loral canoed down this river province in 2005 in an attempt to arrive at the concert before nightfall. She passed through three floodgates before entering the Vannecy Flood Basin where her canoe capsized and she almost drowned. The Durance River Province itself extends eastwards beyond Vannecy.

Flooded Columns

11/3/2020

An ancient pavilion erected on the side of the College Des Sirènes in 1819, when the college was built. The pavilion was originally linked to the side of the college building via a slatted wooden walkway, which was swept away during the Great Flood. During the remainder of the 20th century, the flooded columns simply stood as an ornamental garden feature, where schoolgirls from the College Des Sirènes were allowed to congregate. Since then, water from the Flood Control Dam #3 has been gradually creeping up the shore towards the college building and the elegant, classical columns have sunk beneath the water. Today, they are half submerged when the tide is in, but the area has proved an excellent place for paddling (or skinny-dipping, as documented in Hair, Lipstick and a Candle). It is thought that underneath the Flooded Columns is located Arielle's Chalice.

Flood Control Dam #3

11/3/2020

One of the several flood control dams that regulate the flow of water from the peaks of the Alps into the designated flood basins. Flood Control Dam #3 is located to the west of Vannecy, a staggering feat of engineering wizardry, to harness the River Durance, and is constructed from over 150 square metres of pure metal. It was constructed in 1883, towards the end of the Industrial Revolution, by Martineau.

The water table that lies behind the dam is estimated to contain 1.7 billion cubic feet of water, which gently trickles into the valley below through four remote controlled sluice gates. The dam has prevented flooding problems, which have plagued the valley for centuries.

College Des Sirènes

11/3/2020

College Des Sirènes is one of the five Lorallian elemental sites, positioned at 5-o-clock (150°) to the meridian, aligned with the Planet Venus, the metal Copper and the element Water.

College Des Sirènes is located in the Vannecy Flood Basin, Durance River Province, between Flood Control Dam #3 and Flood Control Dam #4 and near to the nearby village of Vannecy. The college building is an ebullant, sprawling manor house, set against acres of wild wetlands and shallow flood plains.

The standards are excellent. The school includes a full auditorium (with actual people in it!) and atrium along with a recital room, chapel, library, and ten classrooms. There are four dormitories spread out over the first floor and second floor, which can accommodate up to eighty students.

Vannecy

11/3/2020

Vannecy is located between Flood Control Dam #3 and Flood Control Dam #4 of the Durance River Province, Rhône-Alps, France. It is situated on a high plateau in the French Alps, geographically and topographically named the Vannecy Flood Basin.

There are many opportunities in Vannecy. The College Des Sirènes is a vibrant concert venue where visiting orchestras, choirs, chamber groups, soloists and shows stop by in the valley to perform. The church, museum and market square also attract a number of writers, painters and dancers from the land. Vannecy is a rich, friendly community, and there are numerous opportunities for excursions and watersports within the valley itself, such as walking, sailing and windsurfing.

Vannecy is famous for its artistic, bohemian, cultural experience. It is a hub of musicians, actors, composers, dancers, mimes, mocks, painters, poets and writers. It is also the birthplace of the elaborate art-form "Ballet Dare" which is a combination of ballet and trapeze.
